Rajan K. Pillai, is the Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) and is a pioneer in the field of underground rock cavern storages in India.

Mr. Pillai started his career as a Management Trainee in 1978, at the Visakh Refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and superannuated as an Executive Director from HPCL. In HPCL he acquired vast experience in refinery maintenance, refinery projects, project purchase and business development.
Prior to joining ISPRL, as the Project Head of HPCL TOTAL JV, Mr. Pillai was involved in the formation South Asia LPG Company Private Limited, a Joint Venture between HPCL and TOTAL of France. Later, as Deputy CEO SALPG he was responsible for the execution of the LPG Cavern project which is the first underground cavern storage project in the country and is also one of the deepest underground rock caverns in the world. It is also India’s largest LPG storage facility. The cavern was constructed, through vertical shafts only and has been acclaimed as a marvel of engineering.

Mr. Pillai was specially picked up by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to head ISPRL because of his rich experience in underground rock cavern storage facilities. He continued with ISPRL as CEO&MD, ISPRL after his superannuation.

As CEO & MD - ISPRL, Mr. Pillai is responsible for the execution of the ISPRL projects which involved creation of the largest underground cavities in the country, and 22 million tons of hard rock excavation. The projects involved nearly 30 kms. of tunneling out of which more than 12 km of tunnels have dimensions of approx.. 30m height and 20m width. Government of India has allocated Rs.4948 crores for filling up of crude oil and his current focus is to undertake the most daunting task of exploring alternate options for filling store with crude oil, thereby saving the Government expenditure on crude oil.

Mr.Pillai is an avid reader and has a passion for photography.

He holds B-Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from BHU-IT and a Master of Engineering degree in Energy Planning and Policy from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok.
